The 2016 - 17 Play/Write program worked with 300 students in five New Orleans schools:
- The International School of Louisiana (4217 Orleans Ave.)
- Success Preparatory Academy (2011 Bienville St.)
- St. Mary's Academy (6905 Chef Menteur Hwy.)
- Warren Easton High School (3019 Canal St.)
- Young Audience Charter School (1407 Virgil St.)
The students spent the fall learning the fundamentals of playwriting, writing group plays and staging them with costumes, and playing theatre and improv games. Students also saw a production of Goat in the Road's Snowman, Monster, Dog.
In January, students decided on which play they wanted to turn into their final, full length play and the heavy duty playwriting began!
The 2017 Showcase took place on Monday, May 15 at Dillard University's Cook Theatre. 10 students plays were presented by five local theatre and dance companies.
Play/Write 2017 was supported by an Artworks grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and grants from the Gambit’s Foundation for Entertainment, Development and Education, the New Orleans Theatre Association, the Pavey-Deblois Foundation, and the Keller Family Foundation. It is supported in part by a Community Arts Grant made possible by the City of New Orleans and a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, both of which are administered by the Arts Council of New Orleans.
