This year's Play/Write program is working with 300 students in five New Orleans schools:
- The International School of Louisiana (4217 Orleans Ave.)
- Success Preparatory Academy (2011 Bienville St.)
- St. Mary's Academy (6905 Chef Menteur Hwy.)
- Warren Easton High School (3019 Canal St.)
- Young Audience Charter School (1407 Virgil St.)
The students are spending the fall learning the fundamentals of playwriting, writing group plays and staging them with costumes, and playing theatre and improv games. Students also saw a production of Goat in the Road's Snowman, Monster, Dog.
In January, studentswill decide on which play they want to turn into their final, full length play and the heavy duty playwriting begins!
This year's Showcase will be held in May, date TBD.
Play/Write is funded by the New Orleans Theatre Association, and an Artworks grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. It is also supported by a grant from the Gambit’s Foundation for Entertainment, Development and Education, and a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, which is administered by the Arts Council of New Orleans.
